📘 The L.M.D System
Bachelor – Master – Doctorate
The L.M.D system is a new structure of higher education in Algeria, based on three degrees: L for Licence (Bachelor), M for Master, and D for Doctorate. It has been implemented in Algeria since September 2004.
📚 Basic Concepts
- Semester: a teaching period lasting an average of 14 weeks.
- Field: a field of study divided into branches, and each branch into specializations.
- Branch: a part of the field defining a specific type of training.
- Specialization: a subdivision of the branch determining the learning path and the skills to be acquired.
- Teaching Unit (TU): composed of one or more subjects (lectures, tutorials, practical work).
⚖️ Coefficients and Credits
- Coefficients: measure the importance of a subject within a given teaching unit.
- Credits: represent the workload required to master the knowledge in a teaching unit.
- Credit Acquisition: obtained after successfully validating a subject or teaching unit.
- Credit Transfer: possible to another training path if approved by the pedagogical team concerned.
Each semester consists of 30 credits. Each diploma corresponds to 180 credits for the Bachelor’s degree and an additional 120 credits for the Master’s degree.
